How to Form a Web Development Team from Scratch

Tuesday 31 March 2009 @ 7:00 pm

web team

E-Revolution, touted years ago as the next trend in business, is currently bustling, right under the noses of those who are too concentrated with the traditional office setup. In truth, the professional world is getting smaller, given the number of opportunities offered worldwide. The global recession even helped establish the importance of business process outsourcing, with the lower costs offered by workers from third world countries. Getting jobs as an individual is quite profitable, but forming a web development team will give you and your partners sizable profits. So here are the steps in forming a web development team from scratch.

Step 1: Eye the Right People

Some people are built to be workers while the more adventurous ones sharpen their skills en route to finding more profitable ventures. These adventurous people, once they find potential in a project/venture, will be your biggest allies, especially if they are convinced with your resolve. To increase your number of options, build a network of probable employees or people with numerous connections. Weed out the skillful and passionate people and from there, select those who you can trust.

Step 2: Convince People about the Profitability of Online Jobs

The internet, progressively growing as a source for profitable ventures, provides jobs and business ideas. You just have to do a little sleuthing to grasp the big picture. Putting up websites, much more taking mass jobs from overseas clients, give you a continuous flow of income as long as you perform well. After raking enough profits, your team and the number of projects will grow. A reversal of roles will take place as you hire writers, web developers, and graphic designers, when you acquire a plethora of loyal clients. If you live in a developed country, hiring people online is your best bet, forming the internet’s profit cycle. Explain this logic to the prospective members of your team. Most of them will realize the potential and join your cause.

Step 3: Build a Reputation with Your Current Pool

Completing a functional team might take some time. The same goes with landing the juiciest projects online. So the most logical thing to do is make the do with what you have. Set up individual Paypal accounts for your team, so you can transact quickly with clients. Go to websites like odesk.com and getafreelancer.com and grab projects as individuals until your team has been completed. By doing so, you can build a good reputation as individual performers. When the clients see that a bunch of good performers have formed a team, they will flock you with offers. How can they pass up the chance of working with proven quality performers?

Step 4: Play with the Pricing

At first, you can settle for the prices offered by job providers in freelance websites. Perform a string projects for them as a team until you have secured good ratings in those sites. Communicate with the providers you often work with and strike a deal. Know their rates. Since they know the quality of your team’s work, you can state a figure slightly higher than their offer. Explain to the providers your long term goal of expanding the team, which will stimulate their interests. As a result, they may agree with your price or settle at a slightly lower amount.

Step 5: From Service Providers to Job Providers

When you have accumulated a haul of projects from various clients, you may not have the manpower to do them all. Now you’ll have to play the role of job provider. You have the option to find talents locally or post job offers in freelance websites. If labor is quite pricey in your country or area, seeking talents out of town is a good idea. They can give you quality outputs for a lower price. Just check the credentials posted on their freelance website accounts for their skill level. As for their work attitude, conduct an online interview via an instant messaging service, preferably with a webcam and a microphone.

The Website Alternative

Let’s say, you don’t do good on your initial venture. Don’t give up easily. The internet offers too many opportunities, in some cases even more than the city’s offerings. You can create websites in the meantime, securing profits through marketing, promotions and dozens of banner ads. When you have earned a reputation for launching populous websites, secure clients on freelance sites. Your team will surely be a hot item, once the job providers see the websites you developed.

        giving up on your career

        Tuesday 31 March 2009 @ 7:00 pm

I’ve had this conversation a few times with friends and family:  when do you give up on your career? It’s a terrifying thing.  You’ve invested years of your life and made countless sacrifices to get to a certain point, and suddenly one day you realize that you can’t keep going because:

        1. the job market in your career field has dried up or
        2. you need to move to a different town where your career isn’t in high demand or
        3. you just don’t want to stay in your current career path anymore.

I’ve been dealing with all three, and I have realized that the real issue may not be the economy or the state of my profession but just the fact that I don’t want to work in my field anymore. I’m energized by the idea of doing something different, and so I started sending off inquiries through my network and through company sites inquiring about the possibility of doing other kinds of work.

I’m sure the statistics that show that people will change careers at least three times (or whatever) during their working lives are common knowledge by now. I don’t think it’s strictly accurate.  My sister-in-law - a doctor - will probably not change her career, nor will my other sister-in-law, a nurse.  But I think it’s almost inevitable at this point that I’ll do something else between now and the day when I stop working.  Bubelah will almost certainly do something different when she returns to work.  I think even lifelong adherents to a single career path will dabble in other areas.

But the question is really this:  is switching your career giving up? Or is it simply moving on?  If you’ve devoted so much time and effort into obtaining the education and training and credentials and network and experience required for Job X, is dumping it in order to move on to Job Y part of the plan, or just an admission that the career path was hitting a dead end?

I don’t think of humans as static creatures. I am, in no small way, a completely different person today than I was 5, 10, 20, 30 years ago.  The choices 20-year-old Steve made to study accounting seem like sepia-toned photos to 40-year-old Steve.  They echo dimly in my memory, and I remember why I made those choices, but they are not my choices today.  I have changed, and either because of the choices I made 20 years ago or despite them I am ready to move on.

It’s an odd feeling to hit middle age with no real direction professionally. If you’re good at what you do, but hate doing it, the idea of starting over is scary for only one reason - money.  I am enough of an egoist to think that I’ll be successful at a new career, even at this (relatively) late stage in my life.  Check back in a few years and you’ll see if I was or not, but one thing I’ve learned over the years is that I’ll regret not having tried far more than trying and failing.

Bottled Water is so Yesterday: Boxed Water Is Better

            Sunday 29 March 2009 @ 11:40 pm

An eco-friendly approach to bottled water, Boxed Water Is Better “started with the simple idea of creating a new bottled water brand that is kinder to the environment and gives back a bit.”

            Main highlights are:

            • The creation and distribution of the container has a much lower (in some cases up to 80%) carbon footprint compared to plastic water bottles
            • The trees used to make the container come from certified, well managed forests
            • 10% of the profit is donated to world water relief foundations
            • 10% of the profit is donated to reforestation foundations

This product is currently sold primarily in Michigan. However, you can sign up for their mailing list to see when Boxed Water will be sold at a retailer near you.

Now, my only personal concern is the fact that I enjoy holding a plastic water bottle because it is convenient and easy to grab on the go. Not sure how much I’d enjoy chugging from a “milk carton.” Well maybe if they added one of those straws that come attached, like the mini Tropicana packaging :)

              Wii Spray Offers Digital Graffiti

              Sunday 29 March 2009 @ 11:40 pm

To those graffiti artists who need yet another venue to “tag,” to those who miss the ability to do so because they don’t want to get in trouble, or even to those who have only been observers and want to take part in the creation process, check this out.

Wii Spray is a prototype currently under development in Weimar, Germany by two students: Martin Lihs and Frank Matuse.

According to the Wii Spray website, the product “is to be seen as an interface to give graffiti a new virtual level outside of the real existing world.” It aims to give sprayers all the tools of a real-life spraycan in a digital format.

The spraycan simulates the real act of spraying characteristics and offers a wide range of different caps, paints and the possibility to use your own backgrounds (photos, graphics, etc.). Collaborative spraying on a virtual wall is planned as well.

                    Asylum’s Year End Sex Review

                    Sunday 29 March 2009 @ 11:40 pm

asylumCrazy how I came across this story. A friend (Michelle) sent another friend (Gio) an article about age. Gio then sent the article to another friend (Dorn). As Dorn is reading the story, he notices a news blurb about “The 25 Sexiest Things Asylum Saw Last Year.” He decides to click on it. Bam! (like Emeril) there I was mentioned in the Number 1 spot ahead of Gisele Bundchen’s striped socks!
